The ‘Going Out There’ framework integrates the principles of the UNCRC by ensuring safe, enriching, and equitable outdoor experiences for children and young people. By embedding children’s rights into its structure, the framework not only enhances educational outcomes but also upholds their fundamental rights to participation, development, and well-being.

The framework aligns with the four general principles of the UNCRC:

  • Non-discrimination (Article 2) – Ensuring all children and young people have equal access to outdoor experiences
  • Best interests of the child (Article 3) – Prioritising the safety, well-being, and holistic development of children in all planning and decision-making
  • Right to life, survival, and development (Article 6) – Providing opportunities that support physical, mental, and social development
  • Right to be heard (Article 12) – Actively involving children and young people in decision-making about outdoor activities

By following the processes outlined in this document, you can confidently involve children and young people in planning safe and inclusive off-site visits and outdoor learning opportunities. Resources are available to support a consistent and equitable approach across all settings.

This framework also connects to key UNCRC articles, including:

  • Article 24: Right to health
  • Article 28: Right to education
  • Article 29: Goals of education
  • Article 31: Right to play, leisure, and cultural life
